Pawtners For Life
About Us
Pawtners For Life Humane Society (PFLHS) is a Non-Profit 501(c)(3) organization servicing the pets and people of Poplar Bluff and the Butler County area. PFLHS is about families and communities, pets are a part of both, and has vowed to provide humane care and treatment for all animals in our care. We are a limited admission, limited no-kill organization, meaning that euthanasia will be provided only when necessary, in highly aggressive and incurably sick animals. As a public not-for-profit we depend solely on the donations from the community, we receive NO Funding from local, state, or federal government.
Where we came from
Pawtners For Life Humane Society started out as one individual - Melissa McDonald our president & founder. Melissa moved to Poplar Bluff in 1995, and after visiting the PB Animal Control Shelter, seeing the conditions the animals where in and hearing the fate of a sweet and loving litter of puppies, she realized there was a need for another animal shelter in our area. Melissa started taking in unwanted animals into her home and then finding new loving homes for them. She has done this for the last 18 years.
Over the years several have joined her. In 2005, this group of citizens concerned not only with the abandonment and abuse of animals in our area, but now also the escalading pet overpopulation epidemic and the high euthanization rate in local animal control facilities, formed PFLHS and applied for their 501(c)(3) non-profit status (which was granted in the spring of 2006).
Where we are now
PFLHS currently runs out of foster homes and by appointment. Due to this we are limited in the number of animals we can take in, if you would like to become a foster home please visit foster home.
We are currently raising money to start a Low Cost Spay and Neuter clinic to help combat the overpopulation problem for more info go to snclinic.
We are also in the process of setting up "Adoption Days" to be held in Whitely Park on Sat afternoons please check back for more info.
What we are planning
PFLHS is committed to progress. We have developed a 3 year strategic plan to help with the overpopulation in our area and the strain on the local Animal Control facilities. Starting with a Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic, increasing our membership and volunteer base, building a state of the art "Green" Animal Community Center and expanding our public programs constitute our primary goals so that we may help our unfortunate and castoff companions.
Services we plan to offer in the near future to families and the surrounding communities:
Shelter for lost and stray animals complete with bottomless water, food and love.
Spay/Neuter Surgery to prevent more unwanted animals.
Basic Vaccinations, testing, and medications to keep pets healthy.
Pick up of stray animals and provide them a safe place to stay.
Help for Seniors and Low Income Families - Project Pet Food, Low cost clinic.
Community Education Programs - to teach responsible pet ownership and kindness to animals.
Pets Love People - Animal Therapy Program for seniors, abused children, teens, and adults to help in the healing process.
The Poplar Bluff area is expanding quickly. With the completion of four lane 67, more people will be living and passing through this area. More people mean more pets. More pets mean more chances that pets will reproduce and swell exponentially the population of unwanted and abandoned animals in our area. We are committed to promoting public awareness for the responsibility the public has to spay and neuter their animals.
